Blue Lily, Nymphaea caerulea
 

Nymphaea caerulea is also known as Blue Lotus, Egyptian Blue Lotus, Blue Water Lily and Sacred Narcotic Lily of the Nile. Flowers have been found to contain apor-phine, a substance that is closely related to the opiate apomorphine.

Blue and White lily's were the most important cultivated “ritual” plants of ancient Egypt. Growing wild in the lowlands of the Nile they were esteemed for there beauty, symbolism and probably also for there inebriating effects to produce a shamanic ecstasy among the elite priesthood. They have been closely linked to the detailed and visionary concepts of the afterlife and re-birth of ancient Egyptian beliefs. The Sacred Narcotic Lily of the Nile was found scattered over Tutankhamen's body when the Pharaoh's tomb was opened in 1922 and was associated with the sun god Ra as the bringer of light.
