Sinicuichi, Heimia salicifolia

Sinicuichi shrub can be found from Argentina to Mexico. It has been used in shamanic rituals and ancient divination since the time of the Aztecs. Traditionally the Sinicuichi leaves are crushed and mixed with water and left to ferment in the sun for 2 days. This intoxicating drink causes drowsiness and euphoria. Auditory hallucinations may also occur and it quite often helps the drinker to recall past events, even pre natal as if they happened only yesterday.

Sinicuichi belongs to the Lythroceae family and is know to contain at least alkaloids. Cryogenine or vertine seem to be most active but strangely enough probably not responsible for the hallucinogenic effects caused by ingesting this plant.
